New Federal Compensation Available for St. Louis Radiation Exposure Victims

Most of my blog articles focus on retirement and making educated financial decisions that can help people’s financial future. Today’s topic is different. It has nothing to do with retirement planning—and, tragically, many of the people affected never had the chance to retire or even live a full life. Thanks to legislation championed by Senator Hawley, the U.S. now has a formal program to support those impacted.

If you haven’t heard, the Federal Radiation Exposure Compensation Act was expanded under the One Big Beautiful Bill in July. As a Pattonville High School alumnus who grew up in one of the eligible ZIP codes, this issue is personal. I’ve watched friends, neighbors, and families confront cancers linked to radioactive contamination in our community. My former business partner and close friend, who grew up in Hazelwood, passed away from cancer at just 62. No legislation can bring back the loved ones we’ve lost, but this program finally provides meaningful compensation for those harmed.

St. Louis County Impacted Zip Codes

Here’s what you need to know. If you or a family member has been diagnosed with nearly any type of cancer and lived in one of the eligible ZIP codes for at least two years after 1949, you should apply. According to St. Louis County, eligible individuals may receive either a one-time, tax-free payment of $50,000 or unlimited reimbursement for out-of-pocket medical expenses. The application form is available directly through the county’s website.

You will need documentation. These documents include proof of presence in the affected area, and proof of disease. If you are filing for a lost spouse or parent, you will need to provide proof as a surviving spouse or child.

If you need help proving residency, your local St. Louis County Public Library can assist. They offer research tools and support for locating historical documents that verify where you or your loved ones lived. You can also reach out to The Pink Angels Foundation for assistance in applying. I will provide all useful links below.

Even if this doesn’t apply to you, it likely applies to someone you know. Please consider sharing this information so the people affected receive the support they deserve.
